What is a GCKey? A GCKey is a username and password that lets you sign in to most Government of Canada online accounts that accept it. It is not an account by itself: you still register separately with each service you use, such as your IRCC secure account. Anyone in any country can sign up. Newcomers meet it early because it is one of the two ways to sign in to IRCC.

Quick answer

  • Choose the GCKey button on the sign-in page of the service, then select Sign Up.
  • Create a unique username and password, set recovery questions, and add a recovery email.
  • Use the GCKey at least once every two years or it may expire and be revoked.
  • A revoked GCKey cannot be recovered.

How do you create a GCKey?

  1. On the account’s sign-in page, select the GCKey button, then Sign Up on the “Welcome to GCKey” page.
  2. Accept the Terms and Conditions.
  3. Create a username that meets every item in the Username Checklist. It must be unique and should not contain personal information such as your name, SIN, mailing address or email address.
  4. Create a password that meets every item in the Password Checklist and re-enter it exactly.
  5. Create recovery questions and answers. These are required. You also choose a memorable person and a memorable date, with optional hints.
  6. Add a recovery email address. This is optional but strongly recommended.
  7. You may be asked to choose a two-factor method, such as an authenticator app or an email address. Save the recovery codes you are given.

You can create more than one GCKey, but keep track of which one is linked to each account. Your GCKey also needs JavaScript and cookies enabled in the browser.

What if you forget your GCKey username?

If you added a recovery email, select “Forgot your username?” and enter that email. Your username is sent to you. Without a recovery email, you must create a new GCKey and register again with each account.

What if you forget your GCKey password?

Your situation What to do
You added a recovery email Enter your username, select Continue, enter the confirmation code sent to your email, then answer your recovery question
No recovery email Use the Recovery Q&A option and answer your recovery questions, memorable person and memorable date
Either way Set a new password and confirm it

What if you lose your two-factor method?

Sign in, select “Recover account” and enter one of the recovery codes you saved when you set up two-factor authentication. If you have no recovery codes, you must register for a new account.

Why do you need to use it every two years?

The Government of Canada page says the system requires you to use your GCKey at least once every two years. If you do not, it may expire and be revoked. A revoked GCKey cannot be recovered, and revoking your GCKey yourself cannot be undone. If you are waiting a long time for an immigration decision, sign in now and then.

GCKey or Sign-In Partner: which should you pick?

IRCC offers two sign-in options: a GCKey, or the Canadian Interac Sign-In Partner, which uses your bank or credit union. IRCC says to use the option you registered with every time you sign in, because it is tied to your account. To switch, you must register the other option, and you may then need to link your application to your account. Our guide to the IRCC secure account covers what to do after you sign in.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the recovery email, then losing the username.
  • Putting your name, SIN or email address in the username.
  • Not saving the two-factor recovery codes.
  • Creating several GCKeys and forgetting which one is linked to your application.
  • Leaving the GCKey unused for more than two years.

FAQ

Is a GCKey the same as an IRCC account?

No. A GCKey only signs you in. You still register with each service.

Can I use a GCKey from outside Canada?

Yes. Anyone in any country can sign up.

Is “cgkey” or “gc key” the same thing?

Yes. People often type it that way, but the correct name is GCKey.

Key takeaways

  • A GCKey is a sign-in, not an account.
  • Always add a recovery email and save your recovery codes.
  • Use it at least once every two years.
