Healthcare in Poland for UK Nationals: NFZ Contributions, S1 and Registration
In this guide
Healthcare in Poland is run through the National Health Fund (NFZ), and GOV.UK says employees pay contributions of 9% of salary, deducted monthly. If you are self-employed or not working, you can pay voluntary contributions directly to the NFZ each month, unless you are registered as unemployed in Poland.
Quick answer
- Employees: NFZ contributions come out of salary at 9%.
- Self-employed or not working: voluntary monthly contributions to the NFZ.
- Dependants are covered under your insurance if they have none of their own.
- UK State Pension recipients may be able to use an S1.
How do I register for healthcare in Poland?
- Register as a resident at the administrative offices of your provincial authority.
- Register with the NFZ. If you are employed, your Polish employer registers you. If you are self-employed or not working, go to your regional NFZ branch.
- Bring ID and proof of insurance when you visit a doctor.
| Situation | How you are covered |
|---|---|
| Employee | 9% of salary to the NFZ |
| Self-employed or not working | Voluntary monthly contributions |
| Posted worker | GHIC, EHIC or S1 |
| Student | Student GHIC for the study period |
How does an S1 work in Poland?
Request an S1 application form by phone from NHS Overseas Healthcare Services, then register it with the NFZ. You will receive a certificate confirming your registration, and you and your dependants are then entitled to healthcare on the same basis as a Polish citizen. Dependants of a State Pensioner lose cover once the pensioner starts claiming the UK State Pension, and a new S1 is then sent to the registered address. For urgent treatment while your registration is delayed, GOV.UK gives 0044 191 218 1999 for NHS Overseas Healthcare Services. See UK State Pension abroad for how to claim.
Common mistakes
- Skipping resident registration before the NFZ step.
- Assuming voluntary cover is open to anyone; it is not available if you are registered as unemployed in Poland.
- Forgetting proof of insurance at appointments.
