IMM 5476 Use of a Representative: When You Need It and How to Submit
In this guide
What is IMM 5476? IMM 5476 is the Use of a Representative form. You complete it when someone speaks or acts for you with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). IRCC says you do not need a representative to apply, and the forms and instructions are free on its website. But if you do use one, the form is required.
Quick answer
- You can apply without a representative.
- If you use one, complete IMM 5476 and have your representative sign it. IRCC says to submit it “even if your representative is uncompensated”.
- Do not submit it for passport applications.
- You can change or cancel a representative at any time with a new IMM 5476.
How do you add a representative?
| Where you are in the process | Online | Paper |
|---|---|---|
| Application not yet submitted | Upload the form with your online application | Send the form with your application to the office listed in your application guide |
| Application already submitted | Use the IRCC Web form | Use the Web form, or mail the form to the processing office’s address |
How do you change or cancel a representative?
Complete a new IMM 5476 and send it electronically through the IRCC Web form. You can do this at any time.
Paid or unpaid representative: what is the difference?
IRCC distinguishes between authorized paid representatives and unpaid representatives. If you hire a paid representative, check that they are authorized. IRCC’s page does not specifically address family or friends acting as representatives, so use the form for any person you authorize.
What warning signs does IRCC list?
- A representative who advertises free services and later asks for a fee.
- A representative who encourages you to lie.
You are responsible for all information in your application, even if a representative completes it. This matters for the many job and visa scams aimed at migrants; read our guides on visa and job offer scams.
Where else does IMM 5476 appear?
It is also listed as an optional form in other IRCC applications, such as criminal rehabilitation, where it is used “if applicable”.
Common mistakes
- Not submitting the form because the helper is a friend or family member and unpaid.
- Submitting it with a passport application.
- Paying someone who is not authorized.
- Forgetting to cancel when you stop using a representative.
FAQ
