Quick answer: A post-graduation work permit (PGWP) lets graduates of eligible Canadian designated learning institutions work in Canada after they finish their studies. IRCC lists the fee as CAD 255. You must apply within 180 days of confirmation that you completed your program, and most applicants must now show proof of language results.

Graduating from a Canadian school does not automatically give you the right to a PGWP, and that catches students out every year. IRCC says graduating from a designated learning institution (DLI) is not enough on its own, so it matters which school and which program you chose. This guide covers the rules IRCC publishes for the PGWP: who qualifies, how long it lasts and the deadlines to watch.

Who is eligible for a PGWP?

IRCC says you meet the general requirement if you:

  • Completed a program of study at a PGWP-eligible DLI that was at least 8 months long (or 900 hours for Quebec programs).
  • Kept full-time student status in Canada during each semester of the program. You may study part-time in your final semester.
  • Apply within 180 days of confirmation that you completed your program.
  • Had a study permit that was valid at some point during the 180 days after you completed your program.

Beyond the general rules, IRCC adds requirements based on your study program (including proof of language skills and, where applicable, field of study) and based on your physical location, whether you are applying from inside or outside Canada.

Do you need to prove your language skills?

IRCC says that as of November 1, 2024, the eligibility requirements changed and most PGWP applicants now need to give proof of language results when they apply. Applicants who submitted before November 1, 2024, and flight school graduates, are exempt from the new requirements.

How long is a PGWP valid?

The length depends on your program and on your passport expiry date, whichever comes first.

Your program PGWP length IRCC may give
At least 8 months but under 2 years Up to the same length as your study program
2 years or more 3 years
Master’s degree (since Feb. 15, 2024), at least 8 months Up to 3 years, even if the program was under 2 years. Does not apply to certificates or diplomas
More than one program May combine lengths if each program is eligible and at least 8 months, and you meet each program’s requirements

IRCC says you cannot get a PGWP if you already had one after an earlier program. If your passport expires before the full length you are eligible for, your PGWP is issued only for the period your passport is valid. You can later apply to extend it on paper once you have a new passport.

What about online study?

IRCC explains that distance learning rules depend on the date you started. For study with a lock-in date on or after September 1, 2024, you must complete at least 50% of your program in class within Canada, and time studying outside Canada is deducted from the PGWP length. Special cases such as accelerated programs also exist, so check IRCC’s eligibility page for your situation.

Common mistakes

  • Missing the 180-day deadline. It runs from confirmation that you completed your program.
  • Assuming any DLI program qualifies. Check that your program is PGWP-eligible.
  • Applying with a short-validity passport. The permit is only issued for as long as your passport is valid.
  • Skipping language proof. Most applicants since November 1, 2024 need it.

FAQ

IRCC says the work experience you gain may help you qualify for permanent residence. See Express Entry explained.
